Leukocytózy refers to an elevated white blood cell count in the blood. White blood cells, also known as leukocytes, are a crucial part of the immune system, defending the body against infection and disease. A higher than normal number of these cells can indicate a variety of underlying conditions.

The most common causes of leukocytózy include infections, both bacterial and viral. The body produces more white blood cells to fight off invading pathogens. Inflammatory conditions, such as autoimmune diseases or tissue injury, can also trigger an increase in white blood cell production. Stress, both physical and emotional, can lead to a temporary rise in leukocyte counts. Certain medications, including corticosteroids, can also cause leukocytózy.

Less commonly, leukocytózy can be a sign of more serious conditions like leukemia or other cancers of the blood or bone marrow. Myeloproliferative disorders, which are a group of diseases characterized by the overproduction of blood cells, can also result in elevated white blood cell counts.

Diagnosis of leukocytózy is typically made through a complete blood count (CBC), a standard laboratory test. Further investigation may be required to determine the specific cause. Treatment for leukocytózy depends entirely on the underlying reason for the elevated white blood cell count. If it's due to an infection, antibiotics or antivirals may be prescribed. If it's related to an inflammatory condition, treatments targeting that inflammation will be used. In cases of leukemia or other blood disorders, more specialized medical interventions are necessary.
