The lepton sector is a fundamental component of the Standard Model of particle physics, encompassing all elementary particles known as leptons and their associated interactions. Leptons are fermions, meaning they have half-integer spin, and are not subject to the strong nuclear force. They are categorized into two groups: charged leptons and neutral leptons, also known as neutrinos.

The charged leptons are the electron (e), muon (μ), and tau (τ). Each of these has a corresponding antiparticle with the same mass but opposite charge. Electrons are familiar to us from everyday electricity and chemistry. Muons and taus are heavier, unstable versions of the electron that decay quickly into lighter particles.

Neutrinos are extremely light, electrically neutral particles that interact only via the weak nuclear force and gravity. There are three types of neutrinos, each associated with a charged lepton: the electron neutrino (νe), the muon neutrino (νμ), and the tau neutrino (ντ). A remarkable discovery in particle physics is neutrino oscillation, where neutrinos can change from one type to another as they travel. This phenomenon implies that neutrinos have a non-zero mass, a departure from the original Standard Model prediction.

The lepton sector plays a crucial role in various physical processes, including radioactive decay, nuclear fusion in stars, and the interactions of cosmic rays. Understanding the properties and interactions of leptons is essential for a complete picture of the fundamental constituents of matter and the forces that govern them.
