LEP most commonly refers to the Large Electron–Positron Collider, a now-decommissioned particle accelerator at CERN near Geneva. Commissioned in the 1980s and operational from 1989 to 2000, LEP comprised a 27-kilometer circular tunnel housing superconducting magnets and accelerating structures. It collided electrons and positrons at center-of-mass energies up to 209 GeV, enabling high-precision studies of electroweak physics. The four major detectors—ALEPH, DELPHI, L3, and OPAL—recorded collision data that yielded precise measurements of Z boson properties, the W boson mass, and the strong coupling constant, as well as stringent tests of the Standard Model and constraints on the number of light neutrino species. When LEP was retired, the tunnel was repurposed to accommodate the Large Hadron Collider, which began operations in 2008.
