Leképezésekkel, or mappings, is a fundamental concept in mathematics and computer science. In its most general sense, a mapping is a rule that assigns to each element in a set, called the domain, exactly one element in another set, called the codomain. This assignment establishes a relationship between the elements of the two sets.

A common example of a mapping is a function. For instance, the function f(x) = x^2 maps each real number x to its square. Here, the domain is the set of all real numbers, and the codomain is also the set of all real numbers. Every real number has a unique square.

Mappings can be visualized using diagrams. Arrows can be drawn from elements in the domain to their corresponding elements in the codomain. Different types of mappings exist, such as injective (one-to-one) mappings, where distinct elements in the domain map to distinct elements in the codomain, and surjective (onto) mappings, where every element in the codomain is mapped to by at least one element in the domain. A mapping that is both injective and surjective is called bijective.

In computer science, mappings are crucial for data structures like hash tables and dictionaries, which store key-value pairs. The keys are mapped to their associated values, allowing for efficient data retrieval. Understanding mappings is essential for grasping many advanced mathematical and computational concepts.
