Laskusäännöistä, or order of operations, are a set of rules that dictate the sequence in which mathematical operations should be performed in an expression to ensure a consistent and unambiguous result. These rules are universally followed in mathematics to avoid confusion and guarantee that everyone arrives at the same answer for a given problem.

The most common mnemonic for remembering the order of operations is PEMDAS (or BODMAS in some regions). PEMDAS stands for Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication and Division (from left to right), and Addition and Subtraction (from left to right). This acronym guides the solver through the steps.

First, any operations within parentheses (or other grouping symbols like brackets or braces) are performed. This is because the expressions inside these symbols are treated as a single unit. After resolving all parentheses, the next step is to evaluate exponents, which include powers and roots.

Following exponents, multiplication and division are performed. It is important to note that these two operations have equal priority and are executed from left to right as they appear in the expression. For example, in the expression 10 / 2 * 5, the division is performed first (10 / 2 = 5), and then the multiplication (5 * 5 = 25).

Finally, after all multiplications and divisions are completed, addition and subtraction are performed. Like multiplication and division, these operations also have equal priority and are performed from left to right. Following these steps ensures that a complex mathematical expression yields a single, correct answer.
