The actinide series consists of the 15 elements with atomic numbers 89 through 103, starting with Actinium and ending with Lawrencium. These elements are characterized by the filling of the 5f subshell. All actinides are radioactive, and most occur naturally only in trace amounts or are synthesized artificially. The most well-known actinide is Uranium, which is used as nuclear fuel. Other actinides, such as Plutonium, are also important in nuclear technology. Due to their radioactivity and often short half-lives, the study and handling of actinides require specialized safety precautions.
