Lamotta is an Italian surname, sometimes rendered as LaMotta or La Motta in English-language texts. The most prominent bearer is Jake LaMotta (1922–2017), an American professional boxer who held the world middleweight title from 1949 to 1951. LaMotta was known for an aggressive, relentless inside fighting style and extensive endurance, and he participated in notable bouts against several top boxers, including a famous rivalry with Sugar Ray Robinson. His life story was adapted into the 1980 film Raging Bull, directed by Martin Scorsese, with Robert De Niro portraying LaMotta; the film chronicles his career and personal struggles. LaMotta also authored a memoir, Raging Bull: My Story, published in 1970.
