Laktátový refers to a chemical compound, specifically the salt or ester of lactic acid. Lactic acid is an organic acid with the chemical formula C3H6O3. It is produced in the body during anaerobic metabolism, a process that occurs when oxygen supply is insufficient for cellular respiration. This is often observed during intense physical activity.

In the bloodstream, lactic acid dissociates into lactate and a hydrogen ion. Lactate itself is not inherently detrimental; it serves as a fuel source for various tissues, including the heart and muscles. However, a rapid accumulation of lactic acid can lead to a decrease in pH, a condition known as lactic acidosis. This can impair muscle function and contribute to fatigue.

The body has mechanisms to clear lactate, primarily through the liver, which can convert it back to glucose through the Cori cycle. During recovery from exercise, lactate levels return to baseline. Lactate is also found in various foods, such as yogurt and sauerkraut, due to fermentation processes involving lactic acid bacteria.
