Lacrimalkanalen, also known as the lacrimal canal or tear duct, refers to a system of small channels within the eye that are responsible for draining tears from the ocular surface. This system begins with puncta, small openings located at the inner corner of the upper and lower eyelids. Tears are collected by these puncta and then flow into tiny tubes called canaliculi.

The superior and inferior canaliculi from each eye converge and drain into the lacrimal sac, a small reservoir situated in a groove on the side of the nose. From the lacrimal sac, tears descend through the nasolacrimal duct, a longer tube that empties into the nasal cavity. This anatomical connection explains why crying often leads to a runny nose, as excess tears drain into the nose.

The lacrimal drainage system is crucial for maintaining a healthy ocular surface. Tears lubricate the eye, remove debris, and contain antibacterial properties. When this system becomes blocked or malfunctioning, it can lead to various conditions, including excessive tearing (epiphora), inflammation of the lacrimal sac (dacryocystitis), or dry eye symptoms if tear drainage is insufficient. Blockages can occur due to inflammation, infection, aging, or congenital abnormalities. Medical intervention may be necessary to restore proper tear drainage.
