Laakerivälykset refers to the clearance or play within a bearing. Bearings are mechanical components that reduce friction between moving parts and allow for rotational or linear movement. They consist of inner and outer rings, rolling elements (balls or rollers), and a cage to separate the rolling elements. The space between these components, specifically the difference in diameter between the inner and outer rings or between the rolling elements and the rings, is the bearing clearance.

There are two main types of bearing clearance: radial clearance and axial clearance. Radial clearance is the distance the inner ring can move perpendicular to the bearing's axis of rotation. Axial clearance, also known as end play, is the distance the inner ring can move parallel to the bearing's axis of rotation.

The amount of clearance is crucial for bearing performance and longevity. Too little clearance can lead to overheating, increased friction, and premature failure due to insufficient lubrication and excessive stress. Too much clearance can result in vibration, noise, uneven load distribution, and damage to adjacent components.

Bearing clearance is typically specified by the manufacturer and is often categorized into standard (normal) clearance and various pre-defined tighter or looser clearances (e.g., C2 for tighter, C3, C4, C5 for looser). The appropriate clearance selection depends on the application, operating conditions such as temperature, load, speed, and the required precision of the system. Proper mounting techniques and lubrication are also essential for maintaining the intended bearing clearance during operation.
