Külmkatoodid, also known as cold cathodes, are electron emitters that do not require heating to produce electrons. Unlike thermionic cathodes, which rely on heat to liberate electrons from a material, cold cathodes utilize other physical phenomena to achieve electron emission. This allows them to operate at lower temperatures and consume less power.

Several types of cold cathodes exist. Field emission cathodes generate electrons by applying a strong electric field to a sharp tip or edge, which pulls electrons out of the material. This effect is amplified by the geometry of the emitter. Another type is the secondary emission cathode, which releases electrons when bombarded by other charged particles, typically ions. This is commonly seen in gas-discharge devices. Photoemission cathodes emit electrons when struck by photons, a process known as the photoelectric effect.

Cold cathodes find applications in various technologies. They are used in vacuum fluorescent displays (VFDs), where they provide a bright and efficient light source. Gas-discharge lamps, such as neon signs and fluorescent lamps, also employ cold cathode technology. In scientific instruments, cold cathodes can be found in electron microscopes and X-ray tubes. Their low power consumption and fast response times make them suitable for certain specialized electronic components and sensors. The absence of heating elements also contributes to a longer lifespan in some applications.
