This typically involves preparing a liquid or solid nutrient-rich substance, known as a growth medium, that provides the essential components for microorganisms or cells to survive, grow, and reproduce.

The composition of the medium is crucial and depends entirely on the specific organism or cell type being cultured. For bacteria, a common medium might include carbohydrates for energy, amino acids for protein synthesis, and inorganic salts for maintaining osmotic balance and providing essential ions. For more sensitive cell cultures, the medium may also contain growth factors, hormones, and vitamins. Solid media, often used for isolating and identifying individual colonies of microorganisms, are usually prepared by adding a solidifying agent, such as agar, to a liquid medium.

The preparation process itself involves carefully measuring and mixing the required ingredients, followed by sterilization to eliminate any contaminating microorganisms.
