käyttöomaisuutena

Käyttöomaisuutena refers to fixed assets or non-current assets in accounting. These are tangible or intangible assets that a company intends to use for more than one accounting period to generate income. They are not intended for resale in the ordinary course of business. Examples include land, buildings, machinery, vehicles, patents, and copyrights.

In Finnish accounting standards, käyttöomaisuutena are typically recorded at their acquisition cost. This cost includes the purchase price and any directly attributable costs necessary to bring the asset into use. Over time, the value of tangible fixed assets decreases due to wear and tear or obsolescence. This reduction in value is recognized through depreciation (poistot), which is systematically allocated over the asset's useful life. For intangible assets, a similar process called amortization (poistot) is applied.

The classification of an asset as käyttöomaisuutena depends on its intended use and expected duration of use by the company. Assets intended for short-term use or for sale are classified as current assets (vaihto-omaisuus). The proper accounting for käyttöomaisuutena is crucial for accurately reflecting a company's financial position and performance. It impacts both the balance sheet, where these assets are listed, and the income statement, through depreciation and amortization expenses.
