Käyttäjätiloihin, often translated as "user space" or "user mode," refers to the execution environment where normal user programs run. In operating systems, this is a distinct memory area and set of privileges that is separated from the kernel space, where the core operating system code executes. This separation is a fundamental security and stability mechanism.

When a program is running in user mode, it has limited access to the system's hardware and core functionalities. To perform privileged operations, such as accessing hardware devices or managing memory, a user program must request the operating system's kernel to perform the action on its behalf. This is typically done through system calls, which are a well-defined interface between user space and kernel space.

The primary purpose of user space is to protect the operating system's integrity. If a user program were to crash or behave maliciously, it would not be able to directly corrupt the kernel or other parts of the operating system. This isolation enhances system stability and security, preventing a single faulty application from bringing down the entire system. Additionally, user space allows for multiple applications to run concurrently without interfering with each other. Each process in user space has its own virtual memory space, which the operating system manages to ensure isolation.
