kyynelakanaviin
Kyynelakanaviin is a Finnish term that translates to "tear duct canal" in English. It refers to the anatomical passageway that connects the lacrimal sac to the nasal cavity. This system is responsible for draining excess tears from the surface of the eye. When we blink, the movement of the eyelids helps to push tears towards the puncta, which are small openings in the corners of the eyelids. From the puncta, tears flow into the canaliculi, then to the lacrimal sac, and finally down the nasolacrimal duct into the nose. This drainage mechanism prevents the eyes from overflowing with tears and also contributes to the lubrication and cleansing of the ocular surface. Conditions affecting the kyynelakanaviin can lead to excessive tearing (epiphora) or, conversely, a dry eye sensation if the drainage is insufficient. Blockages in this system can occur due to inflammation, infection, or congenital abnormalities, and may require medical intervention to restore proper tear drainage.
