Kylmäaggliutinemia refers to a rare autoimmune disorder characterized by the presence of cold agglutinins in the blood. These cold agglutinins are antibodies that cause red blood cells to clump together (agglutinate) when exposed to temperatures below normal body temperature, typically below 30 degrees Celsius. This agglutination can lead to a decrease in red blood cell count, a condition known as hemolytic anemia, as the clumped cells are destroyed prematurely by the body.

The symptoms of kylmäaggliutinemia can vary in severity and often manifest when the individual is exposed to cold. Common signs include discoloration of the fingers, toes, nose, and ears, which may turn blue or purple. These extremities can also feel cold and numb, and in more severe cases, may experience pain and ulceration. Fatigue and shortness of breath are also common due to the reduced oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood.

Kylmäaggliutinemia can be primary, meaning its cause is unknown, or secondary, developing as a result of another underlying condition such as infections like Mycoplasma pneumoniae or viral illnesses, or certain lymphoproliferative disorders like lymphoma. Diagnosis typically involves blood tests to detect the presence and titer of cold agglutinins and to assess for anemia.

Treatment strategies focus on avoiding cold exposure and managing the underlying cause if present. Medications may be used to suppress the immune system or to reduce the production of cold agglutinins. In some cases, treatments aimed at improving blood flow or preventing red blood cell destruction may be considered. Prognosis depends on the severity of the condition, the presence of an underlying cause, and the effectiveness of treatment.
