This relationship allows for impedance matching. For example, if one wishes to match a source impedance Zs to a load impedance ZL, a kvartbølgetransformator with characteristic impedance Z0 can be inserted between them. By selecting Z0 such that Z0^2 = Zs * ZL, the transformer will present Zs to the source when connected to ZL, thus achieving a perfect impedance match.
