Kvanttiosuus refers to a concept in quantum mechanics related to the discrete nature of energy and other physical quantities. In classical physics, quantities can often take on any value within a continuous range. However, at the quantum level, certain properties are observed to exist only in specific, quantized amounts, like steps on a staircase rather than a smooth ramp.

The term "kvanttiosuus" directly translates to "quantum share" or "quantum portion." This quantization is a fundamental departure from classical intuition and is responsible for many phenomena observed in the microscopic world, such as the stability of atoms and the spectrum of light emitted by elements. Max Planck first introduced the idea of energy quantization in his work on blackbody radiation, proposing that energy is emitted or absorbed in discrete packets called quanta. Albert Einstein later extended this concept to light, suggesting that light itself consists of these energy packets, which are now known as photons. The energy of a photon is directly proportional to its frequency. This quantization principle is a cornerstone of quantum theory and has led to a deeper understanding of matter and energy.
