Kvanttienlukujen, often translated as "quantum numbers," are a set of numerical values used in quantum mechanics to describe the properties of electrons and other subatomic particles within an atom or molecule. These numbers arise from the mathematical solutions to the Schrödinger equation, which describes the wave-like behavior of particles. There are typically four primary quantum numbers: the principal quantum number, the azimuthal or angular momentum quantum number, the magnetic quantum number, and the spin quantum number.

The principal quantum number, denoted by 'n', indicates the electron's energy level and the average distance of the electron from the nucleus. Higher values of 'n' correspond to higher energy levels and greater distances from the nucleus. The azimuthal quantum number, denoted by 'l', describes the shape of an electron's orbital and can take integer values from 0 to n-1. Different values of 'l' correspond to different subshells (s, p, d, f orbitals).

The magnetic quantum number, denoted by 'ml', specifies the orientation of an orbital in space. It can take integer values from -l to +l, including 0. This means that for a given subshell, there are multiple orbitals with different spatial orientations. Finally, the spin quantum number, denoted by 'ms', describes the intrinsic angular momentum of an electron, which is a fundamental property analogous to a tiny magnet. It can only take two values: +1/2 or -1/2, representing the two possible spin directions of an electron. Together, these quantum numbers uniquely define the state of an electron in an atom according to the Pauli exclusion principle.
