Historically, kupcy played a significant role in the economic and cultural exchange between Poland and neighboring regions, including Lithuania, Russia, and Western Europe. Their activities were vital to the development of Poland’s commercial networks, especially during the medieval and early modern periods.

The term kupiec (masculine) and kupczyni (feminine) originates from the Polish verb kupować, meaning "to buy." Kupcy often specialized in goods such as grain, salt, furs, and textiles, acting as intermediaries between producers and consumers.
