Kuivausjäähdytys, also known as desiccant cooling, is a process that combines dehumidification with cooling. It utilizes a desiccant material, such as silica gel or lithium chloride, to absorb moisture from the air. This process of adsorption releases heat, which is then dissipated. The dry air can then be cooled more efficiently through conventional means, as its moisture content is significantly reduced.

The key advantage of kuivausjäähdytys lies in its ability to handle high humidity conditions where conventional air conditioning systems might struggle or become less energy-efficient. By removing moisture first, the subsequent sensible cooling load is reduced. This makes it particularly useful in applications like industrial drying, food processing, and in climates with high latent heat loads.

There are several configurations for kuivausjäähdytys systems. One common approach involves a desiccant wheel, a rotating wheel coated with desiccant material that passes through both the process air stream and a regeneration air stream. As the process air is dehumidified, the desiccant becomes saturated. The regeneration stream, heated to a higher temperature, drives off the absorbed moisture, regenerating the desiccant for reuse.

Another method utilizes fixed-bed desiccant absorbers. In this setup, air passes through a bed of desiccant, which absorbs moisture. Once saturated, the bed is taken offline and regenerated using a heated airflow. The system then switches to a second, regenerated bed to maintain continuous operation.

Kuivausjäähdytys systems can be powered by various heat sources for regeneration, including waste heat, solar thermal energy, or direct combustion, contributing to their potential for energy savings and environmental benefits when coupled with renewable heat sources.
