Kroppsvävnaderna, or body tissues in English, are groups of cells that are similar in structure and function. These cells work together to perform specific tasks within the body. There are four primary types of tissues in the human body: epithelial tissue, connective tissue, muscle tissue, and nervous tissue.

Epithelial tissue covers body surfaces, lines body cavities and organs, and forms glands. It is involved in protection, secretion, absorption, and filtration. Examples include the skin and the lining of the digestive tract.

Connective tissue supports, connects, or separates different types of tissues and organs. It is the most abundant and widely distributed tissue type. Connective tissue includes bone, cartilage, blood, and adipose (fat) tissue. Its functions range from providing structural support to transporting substances.

Muscle tissue is responsible for movement. It is composed of cells that have the special ability to shorten or contract in order to produce movement of the body parts. There are three types of muscle tissue: skeletal muscle, smooth muscle, and cardiac muscle. Skeletal muscle is voluntary, while smooth and cardiac muscle are involuntary.

Nervous tissue is found in the brain, spinal cord, and nerves. It is responsible for transmitting electrical signals throughout the body, allowing for communication and coordination of bodily functions. It is composed of neurons, which transmit nerve impulses, and glial cells, which support and protect the neurons.
