Kristályosodását is the Hungarian term for crystallization, a process by which a solid forms from a solution, melt, or more rarely from a gas. In crystallization, atoms or molecules arrange themselves into a highly ordered, repeating structure known as a crystal lattice. This ordering process occurs when the substance is in a state where its particles have sufficient mobility to move past each other and find energetically favorable positions, but are also subject to attractive forces that hold them together in a specific arrangement.

The driving force for crystallization is typically a decrease in free energy. When a substance transitions from a less ordered state (like a liquid solution) to a more ordered state (a solid crystal), the overall energy of the system is often reduced. This can be achieved by cooling a solution or melt below its freezing point, or by increasing the concentration of a solute in a solvent beyond its solubility limit, causing the excess solute to precipitate out as crystals. Evaporation of the solvent can also lead to supersaturation and subsequent crystallization.

Crystals formed through this process exhibit characteristic geometric shapes, known as crystal habits, which are a direct result of the internal arrangement of their constituent particles. The rate of crystallization can significantly influence the size and perfection of the resulting crystals. Faster crystallization often leads to smaller, more numerous crystals, while slower crystallization can produce larger, more well-defined single crystals. This phenomenon is fundamental in many scientific and industrial processes, including purification of chemicals, formation of minerals, and the manufacture of various materials.
