Crystallization is a physical process through which atoms or molecules arrange themselves into a well-defined, rigid crystal lattice structure to form a crystal. The process consists of two major steps: nucleation and crystal growth. Nucleation is the initial stage where solute molecules dispersed in a solvent begin to gather into clusters, which eventually become stable under the specific operating conditions. These clusters act as the foundation for the crystals. Once nucleation occurs, crystal growth takes place, where additional solute molecules attach to the surface of the nuclei, causing the crystal to increase in size.

Crystallization occurs naturally in various geological and biological settings, such as the formation of snowflakes, minerals, and stalactites. In industrial applications, it is essential for the production of pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and food ingredients like sugar and salt. The size, shape, and purity of the resulting crystals can be controlled by manipulating factors such as temperature, cooling rate, and solvent composition.
