Kreditorerne, or creditors, are individuals or institutions that have a legal claim against a debtor, arising from loans, credit sales, or other financial obligations. They are the party to whom money is owed and may include banks, suppliers, bondholders, or public authorities, as well as private individuals who have lent money. The term encompasses both secured and unsecured creditors, and, in some contexts, preferred or priority creditors.

Creditors are broadly categorized as secured creditors, who hold a security interest in collateral; unsecured creditors, who rely only on the debtor’s promise to pay; and priority creditors, such as employees’ wages, taxes, and certain administrative costs, which are paid before unsecured claims in insolvency proceedings. Trade creditors are a common form of unsecured creditors who supply goods or services on credit.

In normal circumstances, creditors have the right to demand payment, charge interest, and take legal steps to recover what is owed. If the debtor fails to pay, creditors may seek remedies including enforcement of collateral, contractual remedies, or participation in insolvency proceedings. In insolvency, distributions from the debtor’s estate follow a statutory order of priority: secured creditors to the extent of collateral value, then priority claims, then unsecured creditors, and finally subordinated debt if any remains.

Kreditorerne play a central role in credit markets and financial risk management. Their claims influence a debtor’s borrowing costs and financial planning, while laws and courts define their rights and remedies to balance the interests of debtors and lenders.
