koronærarterie
Koronærarterie refers to the blood vessels that supply oxygenated blood to the heart muscle itself. These arteries originate from the aorta, the body's main artery, just above the aortic valve. There are typically two main coronary arteries: the left coronary artery and the right coronary artery. The left coronary artery further divides into the left anterior descending artery and the left circumflex artery. These vessels form a network that nourishes the myocardium, ensuring it can pump blood effectively throughout the body. Blockages or narrowing of these arteries, often due to atherosclerosis (plaque buildup), can lead to reduced blood flow to the heart muscle, a condition known as coronary artery disease. This can manifest as angina (chest pain) or, in severe cases, a myocardial infarction (heart attack). Maintaining the health of the coronary arteries is crucial for overall cardiovascular well-being.
