Koronarartärerna, or coronary arteries, are a crucial part of the circulatory system responsible for supplying oxygenated blood to the heart muscle itself. The heart, like any other organ, requires a constant supply of nutrients and oxygen to function properly, and this vital task is carried out by the coronary arteries.

There are two main coronary arteries, the left and the right. The left coronary artery originates from the aorta, just as it leaves the left ventricle. It quickly branches into the left anterior descending artery and the left circumflex artery. The left anterior descending artery runs down the front of the heart, supplying blood to the anterior wall of the left ventricle and the interventricular septum. The left circumflex artery encircles the heart, supplying blood to the lateral and posterior walls of the left ventricle.

The right coronary artery also originates from the aorta, typically on the right side. It runs along the right side of the heart and usually supplies the right atrium, the right ventricle, and parts of the posterior wall of the left ventricle and the interventricular septum. The specific branching patterns can vary slightly between individuals.

Blockages or narrowing of the coronary arteries, often due to atherosclerosis (the buildup of plaque), can lead to reduced blood flow to the heart muscle. This condition, known as coronary artery disease, can cause symptoms like chest pain (angina) and, in severe cases, can lead to a heart attack (myocardial infarction) if blood flow is completely interrupted. Maintaining healthy coronary arteries is therefore essential for overall cardiovascular health.
