Kontravariantit refers to a concept in mathematics, particularly in linear algebra and differential geometry. It describes a way that mathematical objects, such as vectors and tensors, transform under a change of basis. When a basis undergoes a transformation, a contravariant object transforms in an "opposite" or "contrary" manner to the basis change.

To understand this, consider a vector in a vector space. A vector itself is independent of any chosen basis. However, its components with respect to a basis do change when the basis changes. If the basis vectors are scaled by a factor, the components of a contravariant vector are scaled by the inverse factor to ensure the vector itself remains unchanged. This inverse relationship is the essence of contravariance.

The term is often contrasted with covariance, where objects transform in the "same" way as the basis. Tensors can have both covariant and contravariant indices, and their transformation rules depend on the nature of each index. In physics, particularly in the study of relativity, contravariant and covariant transformations are fundamental for understanding how physical quantities behave in different coordinate systems.
