Kontaktmätningar, often translated as contact measurements or contact potentials, refer to the electrical potential difference that arises at the interface between two different conductors or semiconductors when they are brought into electrical contact. This phenomenon is a fundamental aspect of solid-state physics and electronics, directly related to the work functions of the materials involved.

When two dissimilar materials are in contact, their electrons redistribute until the Fermi levels of both materials align. The Fermi level represents the highest energy level occupied by electrons at absolute zero temperature. This redistribution of charge creates a region of charge imbalance near the interface, resulting in an electric field and thus a potential difference. This potential difference is the contact potential.

The magnitude of the contact potential depends on the difference in the work functions of the two materials. A larger difference in work functions leads to a larger contact potential. This effect is crucial in the operation of many electronic devices, including diodes, transistors, and thermoelectric generators. For instance, in a p-n junction diode, the contact potential at the junction barrier is what prevents the free flow of charge carriers in the absence of an external voltage.

Understanding and controlling contact potentials is essential for designing and optimizing electronic components. While it can be a desired effect in some applications, it can also lead to unwanted voltage drops or parasitic effects in others, necessitating careful material selection and device engineering.
