Kontaktkræfter, often translated as contact forces, are fundamental in physics and describe the forces that arise when two objects are in direct physical contact. These forces are a manifestation of the electromagnetic interactions between the atoms and molecules at the surfaces of the objects. When surfaces are brought close together, the electron clouds of the atoms repel each other, leading to a normal force that is perpendicular to the surfaces in contact.

There are several types of contact forces. The normal force, as mentioned, prevents objects from passing through each other. Friction is another key contact force, acting parallel to the surfaces and opposing relative motion or the tendency of motion. Static friction prevents an object from moving, while kinetic friction acts when an object is already sliding. Tension is a contact force transmitted through a string, rope, or cable when it is pulled taut. This force acts along the length of the flexible object and is exerted by each end on the part of the object next to it.

Understanding contact forces is crucial for analyzing the motion and equilibrium of objects in mechanics. They are responsible for everything from walking to the stability of structures. Despite their ubiquity, the underlying atomic interactions are complex, but macroscopic models effectively describe their behavior.
