Konjunktio is a word class that connects words, phrases, or clauses within sentences. In Finnish grammar, konjunktiot (conjunctions) serve to relate linguistic units and express relations such as addition, contrast, cause, time, or condition. They help build more complex statements without fundamentally altering the base word order of the clauses they join.

Two broad groups are recognized: coordinating conjunctions and subordinating conjunctions. Coordinating conjunctions link elements of equal syntactic rank; Finnish examples include ja (and), tai (or), mutta (but), sekä ... että (both ... and). Subordinating conjunctions introduce dependent clauses and indicate relations like reason, time, or condition; common Finnish subordinators are koska (because), kun (when), jos (if), vaikka (although), että (that). Some languages also use correlative pairs, such as sekä ... että, which pair two elements in a parallel relationship.

Usage and punctuation: konjunktiot organize discourse by connecting clauses and phrases, and they influence rhythm and emphasis. Punctuation rules vary by language and style, but in Finnish a comma is often used before a conjunction that joins two independent clauses. Conjunction choice affects tone and clarity, and certain conjunctions require or imply particular syntactic patterns, such as the introduction of a subordinate clause or the linking of two main clauses.
