Koncentrációkülönbség refers to the difference in the amount of a substance present in different locations or within different phases. This concept is fundamental in many scientific fields, particularly chemistry, physics, and biology. It describes a situation where the concentration of a solute, solvent, or any particular particle is not uniform. For example, in a solution, the concentration of sugar might be higher at the bottom of a glass if it has not fully dissolved and diffused.

This difference in concentration is the driving force behind several important processes. Diffusion, the net movement of particles from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration, occurs because of this gradient. Similarly, osmosis, the movement of water across a semipermeable membrane from a region of lower solute concentration to a region of higher solute concentration, is a direct consequence of concentration differences.

In biological systems, concentration differences are crucial for cell function. For instance, nerve impulses are generated and transmitted through the movement of ions across cell membranes, creating concentration gradients that are then selectively altered. Nutrient and waste product transport across cell membranes also relies on maintaining and exploiting concentration differences. Understanding and quantifying concentration differences allows scientists to predict and explain the behavior of substances in various environments and to design experiments and technologies that utilize these principles.
