Kompressorijaamad are facilities within gas transmission networks and certain industrial plants that raise the pressure of a gas by passing it through one or more compressors. In natural gas pipelines, they compensate for pressure losses due to friction and elevation, enabling long-distance transmission and consistent flow. In processing or industrial contexts, compressor stations may provide feed gas compression, supply process air, or drive pneumatic equipment.

Types and equipment. The two main compressor technologies are centrifugal and reciprocating compressors. Centrifugal units handle large, steady flows and are common on major pipelines, while reciprocating units are favored for variable flow, higher pressure, or smaller capacities. Each station is driven by a prime mover such as a gas turbine, a diesel or electric motor. Ancillary systems include intercoolers and aftercoolers to manage temperature, separators and filters to remove liquids and particulates, lubrication and cooling circuits, fuel supply, and extensive piping and valves. Modern stations use automated control systems and SCADA for real-time monitoring and remote operation.

Operation and safety. Compressor stations maintain target pressures and flow rates, respond to network demands, and coordinate with neighboring facilities. They employ protective interlocks, emergency shutdowns, vibration and leak monitoring, and regular maintenance to ensure reliability and safety. Environmental considerations include noise control, emissions, and proper handling of condensates and hydrocarbon liquids.

Significance. As integral components of gas infrastructure, kompressorijaamad enable efficient transport, delivery reliability, and system resilience. They are subject to industry standards and regulatory oversight regarding design, operation, and safety.
