Kompressioaallot, also known as compression waves or longitudinal waves, are a type of mechanical wave where the particles of the medium oscillate parallel to the direction of wave propagation. Sound waves are a common example of compression waves. When you speak, your vocal cords vibrate, creating compressions and rarefactions in the surrounding air that travel to the listener's ear.

In a compression wave, the energy is transferred through the medium by the displacement of particles from their equilibrium positions. As a compression passes, particles are pushed closer together, and as a rarefaction passes, they spread apart. The speed of a compression wave depends on the properties of the medium, such as its elasticity and density. For instance, sound travels faster through solids than through liquids, and faster through liquids than through gases.
