Kolonneflottasjon is a mineral processing technique used to separate valuable minerals from waste material. It is a type of froth flotation process that is carried out in a tall, cylindrical vessel known as a flotation column. The process involves introducing a slurry of finely ground ore and water into the bottom of the column. Air is then injected into the slurry, creating bubbles.

Reagents are added to the slurry that selectively attach to the surface of the desired mineral particles, making them hydrophobic. These hydrophobic mineral particles then attach to the air bubbles and rise to the surface of the column, forming a froth. The froth is skimmed off the top of the column, carrying the valuable minerals with it. The remaining slurry, which contains the waste material, is discharged from the bottom of the column.

Flotation columns offer several advantages over conventional flotation cells, including higher recovery rates, improved concentrate grades, and lower water and energy consumption. They are particularly effective for processing fine-grained ores and for recovering minerals that are difficult to float. The design of the flotation column, including its height and diameter, can be optimized to suit the specific characteristics of the ore being processed. The flow rate of air and water, as well as the type and dosage of reagents, are also critical parameters that are carefully controlled to ensure efficient mineral separation.
