Kolloidos is a term that refers to a colloidal dispersion. A colloidal dispersion is a mixture where one substance of microscopically small particles is dispersed evenly throughout another substance. These particles are larger than molecules but too small to be seen with a light microscope, typically ranging in size from 1 nanometer to 1 micrometer. Unlike a true solution where the solute is dissolved at a molecular or ionic level, the dispersed particles in a colloid remain suspended and do not settle out easily.

The dispersed particles in a kolloidos can be solids, liquids, or gases, and the continuous medium can also be a solid, liquid, or gas. Common examples of colloidos include milk, where fat globules are dispersed in water, and fog, where water droplets are dispersed in air. Other examples include smoke (solid particles in gas), mayonnaise (liquid droplets in liquid), and butter (water droplets in fat). The particles in a kolloidos exhibit Brownian motion, a random movement caused by collisions with the molecules of the surrounding medium, which helps keep them suspended. Colloidal systems are important in many natural phenomena and industrial processes, affecting properties like viscosity, light scattering, and stability.
