Koagulatie, also known as coagulation or clotting, is a vital biological process that occurs in the blood of vertebrates. It is the mechanism by which blood changes from a liquid to a gel, forming a solid clot. This process is essential for hemostasis, which is the cessation of bleeding from a damaged blood vessel. When a blood vessel is injured, a cascade of biochemical reactions is initiated, involving numerous clotting factors. These factors, mostly proteins, work in a specific sequence to convert a soluble protein called fibrinogen into an insoluble protein called fibrin.
