This fluid acts as a lubricant, allowing for a wide range of motion. Examples of synovial joints include the ball-and-socket joint of the hip and shoulder, the hinge joint of the elbow and knee, and the pivot joint between the atlas and axis vertebrae in the neck. The structure of synovial joints typically includes articular cartilage covering the bone ends, a joint capsule, and synovial membrane. The type and extent of movement at a bone connection depend on its specific anatomical structure and the surrounding ligaments and muscles.
