Kjønnsidentifikasjon refers to a person's internal sense of being male, female, both, neither, or somewhere else along the gender spectrum. It is distinct from biological sex assigned at birth and from sexual orientation. This internal feeling of gender is a fundamental aspect of a person's identity and typically develops over time.

For some individuals, their gender identity aligns with the sex they were assigned at birth. These individuals are often referred to as cisgender. For others, their gender identity differs from the sex assigned at birth. This is known as being transgender. Transgender individuals may identify as male, female, or non-binary, which encompasses identities outside of the male-female binary.

Gender identity is a deeply personal experience and can be expressed in various ways through clothing, behavior, name, and pronouns.
