It involves the continuous circulation of a refrigerant, a substance that readily changes between liquid and gaseous states at specific temperatures and pressures. This phase change is the key to its cooling or heating capabilities.

The cycle typically consists of four main components: a compressor, a condenser, an expansion valve, and an evaporator. The compressor increases the pressure and temperature of the refrigerant gas. This hot, high-pressure gas then flows to the condenser, where it releases heat to the surroundings and condenses into a high-pressure liquid. In heat pump applications, the direction of heat flow is reversed, drawing heat from a colder environment and releasing it into a warmer one for heating purposes.
