Kitaransoittotapa refers to the manner in which a guitar is played. This encompasses a wide range of techniques and stylistic choices that contribute to the overall sound and expression of the instrument. It can be broadly categorized into plucking and strumming techniques for the right hand, and fretting and note manipulation for the left hand.

Right-hand techniques include fingerpicking, where individual strings are plucked with the fingers, and strumming, where multiple strings are sounded simultaneously with a pick or the fingers. Within fingerpicking, various patterns and articulations exist, such as alternating thumb and finger strokes, or arpeggios. Strumming can range from simple downstrokes to complex rhythmic patterns incorporating upstrokes and muting.

Left-hand techniques involve pressing down on the strings against the fretboard to produce different notes. Common techniques include hammer-ons, where a note is sounded by quickly pressing a finger onto a fret without picking the string again, and pull-offs, the inverse of a hammer-on. Bending strings, vibrato, and slides are also crucial left-hand techniques that add expressiveness and melodic nuances to the guitar's sound. The combination and application of these techniques define a guitarist's individual playing style.
