Kirov is a city and administrative center of Kirov Oblast, located in the European part of Russia on the Vyatka River, about 900 kilometers northeast of Moscow. The city has a population of roughly 480,000 to 500,000 people. It serves as the region's core economic, cultural, and educational hub.

Historically, Kirov originated as the medieval town of Vyatka, a name preserved in the Vyatka River and historical references. During the Russian Empire and Soviet period, it functioned as the administrative center of the Vyatka region. In 1934, the city was renamed Kirov in honor of Sergey Kirov, a Soviet political leader whose assassination that year precipitated a wave of political purges. The surrounding region subsequently became Kirov Oblast.

Economically, Kirov is a regional center for machine-building, timber processing, and other light to medium industrial sectors, supported by forestry and agriculture in the surrounding district. The city is a major rail and road junction and sits on the Vyatka River, which contributes to regional trade and transport. It hosts educational and cultural institutions, including universities and museums, and provides services typical of a provincial regional capital.

Notable landmarks include historic churches and public buildings dating from the 18th to 20th centuries, reflecting the city’s architectural heritage. The name Kirov is shared with the oblast and several nearby towns, all named in honor of Sergei Kirov.
