Kilpnäärmehaigus refers to a range of conditions affecting the thyroid gland, a butterfly-shaped endocrine gland located in the neck. The thyroid produces hormones that regulate metabolism, heart rate, body temperature, and many other essential bodily functions. When the thyroid doesn't function properly, it can lead to various health problems.

Common types of kilpnäärmehaigus include hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism. Hyperthyroidism occurs when the thyroid produces too much hormone, leading to symptoms such as weight loss, rapid heartbeat, anxiety, and tremors. Hypothyroidism, conversely, is characterized by the thyroid producing too little hormone, resulting in fatigue, weight gain, feeling cold, and depression.

Diagnosis typically involves blood tests to measure thyroid hormone levels and imaging techniques like ultrasound. Treatment depends on the specific condition and may include medication, radioactive iodine therapy, or surgery.
