Kilpailuasiat refers to legal and regulatory matters concerning competition law in Finland. These issues are handled by the Finnish Competition Authority (Kilpailu- ja kuluttajavirasto, KKv). The primary goal of competition law is to ensure fair and effective competition in the marketplace, which benefits consumers through lower prices, better quality, and greater choice.

Kilpailuasiat can encompass several areas. These include the prohibition of anti-competitive agreements between undertakings, such as cartels or price-fixing arrangements, which are considered serious infringements. Another significant area is the regulation of mergers and acquisitions. Undertakings planning to merge or acquire another company must notify the KKv if certain thresholds of turnover are met. The KKv then assesses whether the merger would significantly impede competition, particularly by creating or strengthening a dominant position.

Furthermore, competition law addresses the abuse of a dominant position. A company holding a dominant position in a particular market must not exploit that position to the detriment of consumers or other businesses. Examples of such abuse can include excessive pricing or unfair trading conditions.

The KKv investigates suspected infringements of competition law, can impose fines on undertakings that violate the rules, and can order remedies to restore competition. Individuals or companies can also report suspected competition law violations to the authority. The aim is to maintain a competitive economic environment and protect the interests of consumers and businesses alike.
