Kiirsorteering, also known as kiir or quicksort, is a widely used efficient sorting algorithm developed by Tony Hoare in 1960. It is a comparison sort, meaning it can sort items of any type for which a "less-than" relation is defined. Kiirsorteering is a divide-and-conquer algorithm, which works by selecting a 'pivot' element from the array and partitioning the other elements into two sub-arrays, according to whether they are less than or greater than the pivot. The sub-arrays are then recursively sorted.

The algorithm can be summarized in the following steps:

1. Choose a pivot element from the array.

2. Partition the other elements into two sub-arrays, according to whether they are less than or greater than the pivot.

3. Recursively apply the above steps to the sub-arrays.

The key to kiirsorteering's efficiency is the choice of the pivot. A good pivot choice can minimize the number of comparisons and swaps, leading to better performance. Common pivot selection strategies include choosing the first element, the last element, the middle element, or a random element.

Kiirsorteering has an average-case time complexity of O(n log n), where n is the number of elements to be sorted. However, in the worst case, when the pivot selection is poor, the time complexity can degrade to O(n^2). To mitigate this, variants of kiirsorteering such as randomized kiirsorteering and median-of-three kiirsorteering have been developed, which select the pivot randomly or use the median of the first, middle, and last elements, respectively.

Kiirsorteering is widely used in computer science due to its efficiency and simplicity. It is used in many programming languages' standard libraries and is a common choice for sorting large datasets. However, for small datasets or datasets with many duplicate elements, other sorting algorithms like insertion sort or merge sort may be more appropriate.
