Keuhkautoimintaan, also known as pneumothorax, is a medical condition characterized by the presence of air or gas in the pleural space, the area between the lungs and the chest wall. This condition can occur spontaneously or as a result of trauma, surgery, or other medical procedures. Pneumothorax can be classified into two main types: primary spontaneous pneumothorax (PSP) and secondary pneumothorax.

Primary spontaneous pneumothorax is a condition where air accumulates in the pleural space without an apparent cause. It is more common in young, healthy individuals, particularly males. Secondary pneumothorax, on the other hand, is caused by an underlying condition such as lung disease, trauma, or medical procedures like chest tube insertion.

Symptoms of pneumothorax can vary depending on the size and location of the air pocket. Common symptoms include chest pain, shortness of breath, and a decrease in lung function. In some cases, pneumothorax may be asymptomatic, especially if the air pocket is small.

Diagnosis of pneumothorax typically involves a chest X-ray or CT scan. Treatment options depend on the severity of the condition. Small pneumothoraces may resolve on their own, while larger ones may require medical intervention such as chest tube insertion to drain the air. In severe cases, surgery may be necessary to repair the lung tissue.

Prevention strategies for pneumothorax include avoiding activities that increase the risk of lung injury, such as smoking and exposure to asbestos. Regular medical check-ups and prompt treatment of underlying lung conditions can also help reduce the risk of developing pneumothorax.
