Ketontestek, also known as ketone bodies, are molecules produced by the liver during periods of low carbohydrate intake or prolonged fasting. These compounds are primarily acetoacetate, beta-hydroxybutyrate, and acetone. When glucose is unavailable as an energy source, the body breaks down fatty acids to produce ketones, which can then be used by the brain and other tissues for fuel.

The production of ketone bodies is a normal metabolic process. However, significantly elevated levels can occur in certain conditions. Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is a serious complication of diabetes characterized by very high ketone levels, along with hyperglycemia and metabolic acidosis. This condition requires immediate medical attention. Ketone levels can also rise during periods of starvation, very low-carbohydrate diets (like ketogenic diets), and prolonged strenuous exercise.

Monitoring ketone levels can be done through urine or blood tests. Urine ketone tests are readily available and can detect the presence of acetoacetate. Blood ketone meters provide a more accurate measurement of beta-hydroxybutyrate, which is the most abundant ketone body in the blood. Understanding ketone levels is important for individuals managing diabetes or following specific dietary plans.
