Keskiluokitusmenetelmä, also known as median ranking or median classification, is a statistical method used to categorize data into classes or groups based on the median value of the dataset. This method is particularly useful when dealing with skewed data or when the goal is to identify a central tendency that is less affected by extreme values.

The process of keskiluokitusmenetelmä involves several steps. First, the dataset is sorted in ascending order. Next, the median value of the entire dataset is calculated. This median value serves as the midpoint or the central value of the data. The dataset is then divided into two halves at the median value. Each half is further divided into two equal parts, and the median of each half is calculated. This process is repeated recursively until the desired number of classes or groups is achieved.

The resulting classes are defined by the median values obtained at each step of the division. The first class includes all values below the first median, the second class includes values between the first and second medians, and so on. The last class includes all values above the last median.

Keskiluokitusmenetelmä is advantageous in situations where the data distribution is not symmetric, as it provides a more robust measure of central tendency compared to the mean. It is also useful when the data contains outliers, as the median is less influenced by extreme values.
