Keskihajonta, often translated as midrange or midpoint, is a statistical measure that represents the value exactly halfway between the maximum and minimum values in a dataset. It is calculated by summing the minimum and maximum values and then dividing by two. The formula is typically expressed as (min + max) / 2.

This measure is simple to compute and provides a quick sense of the central tendency of a dataset, particularly when the data is symmetrically distributed. However, keskihajonta is highly sensitive to outliers. A single extreme value at either the minimum or maximum end of the data can significantly skew the keskihajonta, making it a less robust measure of central tendency compared to the median in the presence of extreme values.

Keskihajonta is often used in introductory statistics and in contexts where extreme values are not a primary concern or are deliberately being highlighted. For instance, in a set of test scores where the lowest score was 50 and the highest was 100, the keskihajonta would be (50 + 100) / 2 = 75. This indicates that the midpoint of the score range is 75. While easy to understand, it doesn't account for how the other scores are distributed within that range.
