kertojaa

Kertoja is a Finnish term for the narrator or storyteller—the person who tells a story or provides the narrative voice. The form kertojaa appears in inflected contexts according to Finnish grammar, for example as a direct object or in partitive constructions. The concept is used in both literary analysis and discussions of oral storytelling.

In literature, the kertoja is the voice through which events are presented to the reader. The narrator can shape what is known to the audience, frame interpretations, and influence tone and atmosphere. Analysts distinguish by perspective, such as first-person kertoja (using the tellers’ own voice) and third-person kertoja (telling the story from outside the characters’ minds). The reliability and distance of the kertoja—whether they are present inside the narrative or narrate from an external vantage point—are common topics of study.

In folklore and traditional storytelling, kertoja often refers to the storyteller who preserves and transmits tales within a community. The performance context, audience interaction, and cultural norms frequently affect the style, emphasis, and content of the narration.

In modern media, the concept extends to narrative voices in film, television, and other formats, including voice-over narration. While the term kertoja is rooted in Finnish linguistic and literary tradition, its function as the carrier of narrative remains a universal notion in storytelling.
